Dorothea Elizabeth Orem (July 15, 1914 – June 22, 2007) was one of America’s foremost nursing theorists who developed the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, also known as the Orem Model of Nursing. In the Dorothea Orem Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory, the role of a nurse is to fill-in the gaps of care that an individual cannot provide for themselves. Orem theorizes that individuals will initiate and perform their own self-care activities on a regular basis so that their overall health and well-being can be maximized. If ever there was a nurse who joined the profession to help others improve their lives, it was Dorothea Orem (1914-2007). Orem’s Self-care Theory of Nursing established her as a leading theorist of nursing practice and education. Nurses in the Family The Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, also known as the Orem Model of Nursing, was developed by Dorothea Orem between 1959 and 2001.
