Healthy Work: Stress Productivity and the Reconstruction of

One model combines both Lazarus’ transactional theory of stress and coping (Lazarus 1986) and Karasek’s JDC theory (Karasek Jr 1979) is the revised transactional model of occupational stress and coping presented by Goh and colleagues (Goh, Sawang and Oei 2010). The ‘job-demand-control-model’ by Karasek is an important model in occupational health research. It proposes that job strain is higher in jobs with high demands and low control. However, this model has been criticised for being too simplistic, therefore it was expanded to include a third dimension: social support. Karasek’s Model of Job Strain (R.A. Karasek, 1979) Purpose Karasek proposed that work situations be classified in terms of the balance they offer between the demands on the worker and level of control he can exert over those demands, as a way to gain insight into the connection between type of occupation and health.

Healthy Work is a "must read" for those concerned with creating healthy organizations. It describes the demand-control model, which has had a huge influence on research on work and health. The model was prompted by Karasek's concern about the consequences of demand-control imbalances in the workplace. The demand-control model is one of the most widely used models for describing the impact of the psychosocial work environment on employee health.

Karasek model of workplace health

The key idea behind the job demands-control model is that control buffers the impact of job demands on strain and can help enhance employees’ job satisfaction with the opportunity to engage in challenging tasks and learn new skills (Karasek, 1979). The Demand/Control model (Karasek 1976; Karasek 1979; Karasek and Theorell 1990), which is discussed below, is based on psychosocial characteristics of work: the psychological demands of work and a combined measure of task control and skill use (decision latitude). Abstract. Karasek'sJob Strain model was tested in a sample of 122 office workers. Two rounds ofdata were collected and used to examine the reliability of the results and the relationships between job characteristics and worker strain over time.
